Do you have any photos of Gomes Grocery?

In 1962, Maria and Armindo Gomes started up Gomes Grocery, a Portuguese bakery and grocery store, located at 810 Union Street in Vancouver. It was sold in 1993 and is now known today as Union Market. Maria and Armindo’s grandchild, Jesse Smith, is in search of some old photos of the market when it was still owned and operated by Jesse’s grandparents.

This is where you come in. Jesse is putting together a scrapbook of photos and stories about Gomes Grocery for her grandfather (sadly, Jesse’s grandmother has passed away). If you have a photo of Gomes Grocery/Union Market between 1962 to 1993, Jesse would love to have a copy of it. If you don’t have a photo but do have a story or fond memory of the market, Jesse would very much be interested in that too! I have some exciting news to share with you. The Portuguese Cultural Centre is now offering SCHOLARSHIPS!

The Portuguese Cultural Centre will award three scholarships of $2,000 to students of Portuguese heritage who are graduating from a British Columbia high school and plan to attend public or private colleges and universities. 2018: My Year in Review

Adeus 2018!

As we are near the end of 2018, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the highlights of my year and those events which were special and unique. A few of them I have not shared with you yet such as my interview with Radio Television Artesia, dinner with Portugal’s Secretary of State of Citizenship and Equality, being the emcee for the previous Consul General’s Farewell Reception, and more.

Before we get into the list, I would like to thank all of the people who put on these great events; from the organizers and performers to the cooks and volunteers and everyone in between, muito obrigada for all your talent, time and hard work.
