Online European Portuguese Classes for Adults

Portugal in Vancouver has been offering European Portuguese  Classes for adults since 2018. We offer a range of beginner classes for those who are new to learning Portuguese and for those who have some knowledge of the language.

At this time, we are offering Level A1  and Level A2 Portuguese classes designed for different levels of beginners.

For new beginners we recommend Level A1, where you will learn familiar words and very basic phrases about everyday situations and when interacting with someone speaking  standard and clear Portuguese.

More experienced beginners we recommend Level A2, where you will expand upon your current knowledge and learn phrases and frequently used vocabulary to deal with most situations encountered in places where Portuguese is widely spoken.

Course Format

Our European Portuguese language classes are offered 100% online using Zoom.  You will meet for two (2) hours once a week for 18 weeks. 

Our online classes are both rewarding and challenging and are intended for adults aged 19 and older. You will participate in a scheduled real-time virtual classroom with your fellow classmates and teacher once a week.

Taught by qualified and experienced teachers whose mother tongue is European Portuguese, our teachers provide an interactive and inclusive learning environment. Your online curriculum may consist of videos, discussions, tests, and other materials delivered through Zoom. 

Just like in a classroom, you will do individual, pair and group work. Students will have ample opportunity to practice speaking Portuguese (primarily in the present tense), asking questions, and receiving feedback from their teacher. You will also participate in offline learning activities in the form of homework consisting of worksheets and exercises from your textbook. 

Your teacher wants to see your faces! To create a welcome and participatory classroom environment, please be prepared to have your cameras turned on.

Course Fee

The course fee is $460.00 + $23.00 (GST) = $483.00 (CAD).

You meet for two (2) hours once a week for 18 weeks. That’s a total of 36 hours of instructional European Portuguese language lessons. The course fee breaks down to less than $13.00/hour.

All prices are in Canadian currency and payments are to be received via bank e-transfer.  For all other payment types including other currencies, there is a $25 (CAD) handling fee plus 5% GST.

All prices are subject to change without notice. If your payment for the course is not received by the deadline provided in your confirmation email, then you will not be registered for the session.

Textbook Fee

The cost of the textbook including any taxes, and shipping and handling fees are not included in the course fee and is an additional cost borne by the student. 

The textbook we use is called PASSAPORTE PARA PORTUGUÊS 1  – LIVRO DO ALUNO – NÍVEIS A1/A2 which is recommended by the Camões Institute of Cooperation and Language for beginner students.

The publisher, Lidel, has issued a new edition of this textbook. While the textbook’s methodology remains the same, they have updated some of the content such as celebrities, prices, identification documents, and some situations that that better represent the modern world.

Please note that two of our classes will continue to use the previous (old) edition of the textbook.

    • Level A1 – New Beginners class studying Units 1 to 8

• • Purchase the OLD edition if you register for either…
    • Level A1 – New Beginners class starting at Unit 10; or
    • Level A2 – Experienced Beginners class starting at Unit 32 

• We recommend that students purchase their textbook directly from the publisher, Lidel. Standard delivery is 10-12 business days but may take longer due to supply chain issues. Don’t worry if you do not receive your textbook before the first day of class. We can make accommodations until your textbook arrives. 

However, if  you decide to purchase from another provider (i.e. Amazon, eBay, etc.), then you do so at your own discretion. If ordering from another provider, then you need to ensure that you are purchasing the correct edition.

Technical Requirements

Students must possess or have access to the following items:

• • Email account
  • Computer (with system requirements to support Zoom)
  • Speakers
  • Microphone (or headphones/headset with a built-in microphone)
  • Webcam which must be on during the class
  • Reliable Internet connection

All classes will be held on Zoom which is a web-conferencing platform. You do not need a Zoom account to participate in our online classes. You can join via your web browser or the Zoom app. It is strongly recommended that you download the Zoom app as your web browser will have limited functionality. You should download the Zoom app a few days before your first class to ensure that it works with your computer system. If you wish, you can sign up for a free Zoom account at zoom.us/signup.

You will be provided with a Zoom link a few days before your classes start.
