Beginner Levels & Textbook
We offer Beginner Level classes taught by instructors from Portugal. Our classes use the textbook, “Passaporte para Português A1/A2” recommended by the Camões Institute of Cooperation and Language. This textbook is for beginners and is comprised of 40 units. For our program, we have based our levels on this textbook as follows:
|Level Groups||Our Class Levels for Portugal in Vancouver||Units|
|A1||Beginner Level 1 (novice-low)||1 to 10|
|A1||Beginner Level 2 (novice-mid)||11 to 20|
|A2||Beginner Level 3 (elementary)||21 to 30|
|A2||Beginner Level 4 (pre-intermediate)||31 to 40|
Classes start in October and are a continuation of previous sessions. With most of our students returning for the next session, the course starts where we left off in the textbook from the previous session. The classes are 10-weeks long, and you will meet at the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Burnaby for two hours once a week in a small classroom setting with approximately 10 students per class. Lessons will be delivered by qualified and experienced teachers whose mother tongue is European Portuguese.
Bonus! You could earn a CAPLE Diploma from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon!
Do NOT call the Portuguese Cultural Centre with your questions about the classes.
Not sure what level you should sign up for? Then take our Self-Assessment Test below. This test is to determine if you should take our Beginner Level 2 (LOW) or Beginner Level 2 (HIGH).
Please note that we offer a different Self-Assessment Test for Levels 3 & 4 students that are provided in class.
We ask that you do not use any assistance to complete the test (i.e. no books, no dictionaries, no Internet, no help from friends or family, etc.)
These tests are to help not only determine your level but also to provide your teacher with a better picture of your overall language skills. If you don’t know the answer to a question, then select the option “I don’t know the answer.”
After you submit your answers, click on the button that says, “View Score.” If you score…
50% or lower, then register for Beginner Level 2 (LOW) – Tuesday Night Class
51% or higher, then register for Beginner Level 2 (HIGH) – Thursday Night Class
